RUSSIA IN THE 21st CENTURE
The political, and business landscapes are changing quickly and those who wish to take part in these changes must first understand their history, the basis for change, and the likely direction that Russia will take.
As much as capitalism and democracy are powerful natural forces, there are strong elements in the Russian character, national identity, and history that prevent reform from taking exactly the course the West would like to see. The great natural wealth of Russia further ensures that Russia can defend national interests against complete "Westernization". In this light, if we are to participate in the development of the Russian market, we are obligated to better understand the history, current events, and potential of that very market.
Russia in the 21st Century is a seminar series introducing you to the business climate, politics, press, and culture of Russia.

Part I: Politics and Business in Russia
Part I of this series is a concentrated two-week seminar series looking at politics and business in Russia from historical, current, and future perspectives. During 40 hours of lecture, you will hear top specialists from Russia's top universities and industry address topics that will give you a solid understanding of the Russian economy, business infrastructure, domestic and foreign policy. This seminar will also introduce you to the legal system and the media of Russia. Excursions to local enterprises and political structures will bring many of these topics into perspective.
Part II: The Press in Russia
Part II of this series takes a look at the evolution of journalism in the Soviet Union and Russia and the issues facing journalists as Russia enters the 21st century. Questions of control over the media and the role of the media in business and politics are certain to make this a very lively and exciting course for journalism students from around the world. Over the course of one week you will hear 18 hours of lecture, visit several of Russia's largest media structures, and participate in a roundtable discussion of Russian and international media issues.
